Seagrass macroinvertebrate bycatches support mosquito net trawl fishery in Madagascar

چکیده

The use of mosquito nets, primarily for targeting small and/or juvenile fish, has rapidly increased in Western Indian Ocean shallow seagrass beds and coral reefs over the last 20 years. However, to date, invertebrate by-catch by locally-made fishing gear not been reported. We studied net trawl fishery areas Bay Toliara, Southwest Madagascar through GPS tracking fishers from August 2018 February 2019. Catches were monitored monthly landing surveys characterize spatial temporal patterns abundance diversity macroinvertebrates beds. Fishing was carried out at low tide, mostly night, pulling a hand-made varying dimensions. Overall, 43 macroinvertebrate taxa identified 217,080 individuals collected 109 catch samples. generally composed crustaceans (mainly Portunidae, Processidae, Penaeidae, Alpheidae). crab Thalamita mitsiensis largely dominated biomass assemblage (from 6% 100% 5 overall density biomass, respectively). Macroinvertebrates 1.5% total per trip (i.e., 4–55 kg −1 ). They sold human consumption or animal feed, which provided additional income (USD 1–24 1–72% trip). This study revealed that resources provide valuable small-scale Madagascar. bycatch generates further encourages trawls exacerbates their negative effects on coastal ecosystems fisheries.

Elasmobranch bycatch in the Italian Adriatic pelagic trawl fishery

Elasmobranchs are among the most threatened long-lived marine species worldwide, and incidental capture is a major source of mortality. The northern central Adriatic Sea, though one of the most overfished basins of the Mediterranean Sea, supports a very valuable marine biodiversity, including elasmobranchs. This study assesses the impact of the northern central Adriatic pelagic trawl fishery on...

Technical efficiency in the Swedish trawl fishery for Norway lobster

Reducing fleet capacity in European fisheries is an important objective of the European Union’s Common Fisheries Policy. The success of such programmes depends both on the variation and the level of efficiency within the fishing fleets. If vessels with significantly lower than average efficiency levels are decommissioned, the actual reduction in fishing capacity will be less than expected. Furt...

Trawl Selectivity in the Barents Sea Demersal Fishery

This chapter provides a general overview of the Barents Sea demersal trawl fishery. First, it reviews historical catch levels and current biomass status of four commercially important demersal species (cod, haddock, Greenland halibut, and redfish) and includes an overview of their management plan that has been carried out by the Joint Norwegian–Russian commission. Then, it presents the evolutio...

Fishery Discards: Factors Affecting Their Variability within a Demersal Trawl Fishery

Discards represent one of the most important issues within current commercial fishing. It occurs for a range of reasons and is influenced by an even more complex array of factors. We address this issue by examining the data collected within the Danish discard observer program and describe the factors that influence discarding within the Danish Kattegat demersal fleet over the period 1997 to 200...
